National Measurement System
Introduction
The National Measurement System (NMS) is responsible for stimulating good measurement practice and enabling business to make accurate and traceable measurements, for the benefit of the nation. This is delivered through maintaining the measurement infrastructure, representing the UK position internationally, enabling fair and safe competition, and providing support for innovation. The NMS is delivered by the national measurement institutes - click here for more information on these organisations.
Good measurement practice results in a better quality of life, through improved trade and consumer protection, a healthier environment and more effective health and safety measures. It also improves the competitiveness of business both at home and in export.
The NMS invests approximately £60m a year in improving measurement in the UK.
NMS Public Consultation - closed with response
NMO has published a response to a public consultation on a Strategy for the National Measurement System. The Strategy document outlined proposals for Government investment in measurement science and research to advance technologies that will underpin the UK's economic growth and provide an innovative response to other national challenges, including Energy, Sustainability, Healthcare, Digital Economy and Security.
Between May and September 2009 NMO consulted interested parties on the proposed strategy. NMO received over 90 responses from across a broad range of stakeholders, ranging from businesses, academics, professional institutions, to national and overseas measurement institutions.
